Excitement on the beach after weeks of hard work!
Imagine building a boat. Building one out
of corrugated cardboard, in fact. You design, cut, glue and tape. You paint,
balance, decorate and finish.
Now you are expected to actually climb into the
darned thing and paddle it around a lake! And not just you, but all of your team
mates in the boat with you!
Well, that's what the cardboard boat class is
all about. We spent the first class going over boat design. Those who listened
(and/or had previous experience from last years class) were much more prepared than those
who didn't. My philosophy? You learn from your mistakes. Man, we had a
lotta learning going on in this session!
After learning the basics, we showed up with
piles of cardboard, adhesive (liquid nails), duct tape, pencils, rulers, knives and high
spirits. We built for 3 weeks, painted for 2 and then we sailed them.
I swear these were supposed to be boats, but we
had a number of submarines too. It's all a part of the learning process, not to
mention a whole heck of a lot of fun! I hope to see many of these kids back in
September for the Merrimack Library Cardboard Boat races.
The photo album at the left is just a small
sampling of the day. If you get a chance, fly with a club, fly with kids, teach the
kids. Have fun and enjoy!
