NEMROC. The New England Model
Rocketry Convention. A perfect way to wrap up the rocketry season (not that
we actually ever stop, but still). NEMROC 2006 is the second convention since the
re-birth of NEMROC. First run in the 80's and early 90's, CMASS, with the help of
FlisKits, have revitalized this convention and (we hope) conventions in general.
A two day event with the first day indoors with a slew of
seminars, lectures, build sessions, vendors and good times with good friends. Day 2
was spent on the field, in the sun, flying rockets all the live long day. Who could
ask for more?
NEMROC has always been more than "just a
convention" to me. Having been involved with it from its inception and involved
in its re-birth, NEMROC has become something of a "dream come true", so to
speak. An accomplishment that I am proud to be associated with. And it could
never happen without the hard work, dedication and professionalism of the folks at CMASS.
For my money, one of the best NAR Sections in the country!
Both days held special moments for me. Of note on Day 1
was seeing my old friend Glen Avalear again. We had lost touch with each other from
the days of Pearl River and the original NEMROC. The founding of FlisKits and the
re-birth of NEMROC has brought us back together and it is a good feeling. Extra
special was getting back in touch with Dick Nelson, the founder and host of the Pearl
River MODROC conventions, a personal inspiration and whose namesake graces our most recent
announcement, the D-Nelson Tomahawk. A kit originally designed as the anniversary
kit of the last Pearl River convention and given new life as a premier kit from FlisKits.
On the field, it was different but no less special.
Friends. Young and old. Old and new. And more FlisKits models in
the air than you could shake a stick at! There were beautifully rendered versions of
many of our products including Tony Vincent's Corona-2 (beautiful flight!), some
incredibly creative modifications to some of our kits like a Deuce's Wild! with ejecting
side-pods (very kewl), upscales (like that beautiful Triskelion). But most important
and significant of all, all the smiling children. More Thing-a-ma-Jig's than you
could shake a stick at and a grinning boy or girl attached to each and every one. No
two looking alike, each one expressing the imagination of its owner.
"Special" doesn't begin to describe it.
With NEMROC 2006 behind us and the iHobby Expo just a week
away I find myself already looking forward to NEMROC 2007.
Keep watch!
