Yes, we actually
had a flight day! It rained all day Saturday so the field wasn't really usable for
our Sunday launch. Good thing we had set Monday aside as our rain date!
Because it was rain free on Sunday, but sure RAINED most of the day on Monday...
But I keep telling folks that CMASS is a die
hard group and this event proved it! I woke about 7am with the intent of doing some
repair on my two UFFO models. I looked out and it didn't look like we were going to
launch. Then, shortly after 8am, I see an email from Bill Spadafora ("he's our
President" - said in my best "watch this" redneck voice) saying that the
launch was ON. |
Oh man, that means
that I actually *do* have to get those models out of the truck and readied for flight!
Who'd'a thunk it?
Raining, grass on the field mowed, but only the
part we were NOT using. The launch area had grass up to your knees. Well, it
would have been up to your knees were it not for all the heavy water that was holding it
pressed to the ground. Temps rising to the balmy high of about 52, mist in the air
and at times a ceiling of about 2, maybe 3 feet... LOL (only kidding, we had a 2000 foot
ceiling...) In many of the pictures, you can see the CMASS flag laying flat against
the flag pole. Looks calm as can be, but you have no idea just how hard the wind has
to blow to get a water soaked flag to really move.... |

We had about 9 people there at
the start and it actually grew to about 15 or 20. I was rather pleased that we had
that many folks come out in this weather. I was rather concerned that we had this
many nuts in CMASS...
But we came here for a reason and that was to
fly rockets and eat hot dogs! Yes, we DID have our hot dog picnic at our CMASS
launch in Amesbury, in the rain. The hot dog rolls were real moist this time too!
I flew about 6 models including my newly
renovated 24mm UFFO model. She goes great on E9 motors. We also had a 3-UFFO
drag race which was a hoot. Lots of gliders, a few HPR flights and a whole lot of
fun. That's what it is all about, isn't it?
Well, I gotta go dry off and try to get the
wrinkles out of my toes. See you folks in a few weeks!
